The valuable insights women and gender-diverse experts have to offer are in peril.

A #ToxicHush of online abuse is threatening to erase equality gains. Women who are Black, Indigenous, Asian, Muslim, an immigrant, living with a disability and identify as 2SLGBTQ+ are particularly targeted.

That’s why we’re mobilizing – to ensure that the virtual megaphone we’ve spent decades putting in their hands is not silenced. But this is not something we can do alone. We need your help to END #ToxicHush.

We’re Recruiting 100 First Responders to Stand Up to Online Violence Against Women

Right now, the Canadian government is revisiting its legislation to protect against hate speech and online harms. This moment offers a critical but shrinking moment of opportunity and we must act swiftly to ensure that the experiences of women and gender-diverse people are reflected.

We need 100 individuals to help Informed Opinions mobilize quickly and are grateful for the support of 8 First Responders so far.

Your donation will support the following initiatives:

  • The Toxic Hush Action Kit offers advice for anyone who experiences online abuse when speaking up on digital platforms, and those who wish to support them.
  • The VIRO app:  In January we’ll launch this research tool to allow those targeted by online hate to record the impact of abuse in limiting their engagement or making them fear for their safety. VIRO will anonymize and aggregate users to demonstrate why new policies and laws are essential.
  • The People’s Tribunal to End Violence Against Women Online: This powerful event will give those most affected their day in court. It will amplify the testimony witnessed and experienced by thousands of people. The judgments will provide a blueprint for policymakers, activists and others to make the platforms accountable.
  • The Amplification of Women’s Voices through our enhanced training and advocacy programs will continue to support even more women in speaking up, boost the number profiled in our expert database, and increase our capacity to engage and incentivize journalists.
