Biography
Monique Frize joined Carleton University as a Professor in the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering and the University of Ottawa, as a Professor in the School of Information Technology and Engineering in July 1997. She was the holder of the NSERC/Nortel Chair for women in Science and Engineering for Ontario (1997-2002). Frize was appointed Distinguished Research Professor at Carleton and Emerita at the University of Ottawa in 2010.
She was the first woman to receive an engineering degree at the University of Ottawa. She was awarded an Athlone Fellowship and completed a Master's in Philosophy in Electrical Engineering (Engineering in Medicine) at Imperial College of Science and Technology in London (UK). She completed a Master's of Business Administration at the Université de Moncton (New Brunswick) in 1986 and a doctorate from Erasmus Universiteit in Rotterdam, The Netherlands in 1989. She was inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering in 1992, an Officer of the Order of Canada in October 1993, and received honourary degrees from University of Ottawa (1992), Ryerson Polytechnique University (1993), York University (1994), Lakehead University (1996) and St-Vincent University (2006). She was made a Fellow of Engineers Canada in 2011, and of IEEE in 2012.
Frize received the Gold Medal of Professional Engineers Ontario in 2010. She published over 200 papers in peer-refereed journals and international conference proceedings in the fields of medical imaging, artificial intelligence applied to clinical decision-support systems and biomedical instrumentation, ethics, and on women in science and engineering. Her first book: The Bold and the Brave: A history of women in science and engineering was published by University of Ottawa Press (2009) and her second Ethics for bioengineers was published by Morgan and Claypool (2011). Her book on Laura Bassi (1711-1778), the first women professor in the world and an experimental physicist was published by Springer in 2013.
