Biography
Dr. Susan Sutherland is a graduate of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto and holds a Masters’ Degree in Clinical Epidemiology from McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario. She is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Dentistry at U of T and the Dentist-in-Chief at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, where she maintains a general practice for the treatment of medically complex patients. Sutherland has served in numerous volunteer positions with provincial and national dental organizations and is the founding President and Chair of the Board of the Canadian Association of Hospital Dentists. She recently led a working group of that organization in partnership with Choosing Wisely Canada to develop the first Canadian list of tests and treatments that patients and dentists should question to reduce harm and avoid unnecessary care. She has provided leadership to the profession in issues such as evidence-based dentistry, the development of clinical practice guidelines, and, most recently, antimicrobial stewardship and the appropriate use of opioids in dentistry.
