Nadine Ibrahim: Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Global Cities
This lecture by Nadine Ibrahim, University of Waterloo, explores the ways in which greenhouse gas emissions in global cities are inconsistently calculated due to the use of different inventories. Dr. Ibrahim compares a few inventories to highlight this issue, showing how greenhouse gas emission numbers reported for cities may differ depending on what is included or excluded and calls for a standardised approach to enable cities to be able to compare numbers and learn from one another.
The Global Urban Lectures are 15-minute lectures on themes related to sustainable urbanisation, delivered by renowned experts, UN-Habitat partners and UN-Habitat staff. The lectures have been ranked among the best MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) on cities.
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the United Nations agency working towards a better urban future. Its mission is to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all.

We have a golden opportunity to do it right when we do go back to a new normal, but that won’t happen without putting in the effort to make these changes now.

Biography
Nadine Ibrahim is a lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Waterloo, and holds the Turkstra Chair in Urban Engineering to lead new educational attitudes and advocate for civil engineers as municipal leaders. Ibrahim works on urban infrastructure, climate change mitigation, and sustainability assessments to create sustainable cities experiencing rapid urbanization impacting buildings, transportation, energy and water consumption, and waste generation. She leverages her industry experience through urban and environmental projects in Canada and abroad. In Canada, she previously worked on infrastructure renewal in municipalities in Southern Ontario focusing on asset management, risk assessment, infrastructure planning, and capital budgeting. Abroad, in the Middle East and North Africa, Ibrahim worked in international development related to the provision of basic infrastructure and services on large-scale projects for clients including the World Bank and the Global Environment Facility.
Her post-doctoral research at the University of Toronto focused on infrastructure challenges and engineering education or sustainable cities in Africa. She is a triple graduate of the University of Toronto, holding a BASc, MASc, and PhD in Civil Engineering, and a Certificate of Preventive Engineering and Social Development.
