St. John’s is known as a flourishing port city, a cultural gem, and popular tourist destination: a picturesque city of pubs and restaurants, music and colourful houses. But a thriving sex trade quietly exists beneath that polished conception, a trade few are aware of or even understand. In an engaging journalistic style, Kerri Cull respectfully reveals the people who make up the city’s surprisingly diverse sex industry and, in the process, makes a compelling humanistic argument for understanding before judgment.

Biography

Kerri Cull has a Master of Arts in English Language and Literature as well as a Bachelor of Education in Post-Secondary Education. As an employee of Verafin, a financial crime fighting software company, she has experience in training financial institutions how to use the software to detect various kinds of money laundering and fraud-related activities. From this related work, Cull's specialization is human trafficking detection. She has spoken at many national and international events.

Her expertise in publishing and writing has merged with her interest in women's experiences in the form of a book of narrative journalism called Rock Paper Sex (second book publication) where she interviewed and worked with people involved in the sex industry in Newfoundland and Labrador and then told their stories. Cull has served on the Justice Minister's Committee to End Violence Against Women and Girls and did a therapeutic writing group with the Blue Door Program along with other volunteer experience at the NL Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre and Street Reach.

Most recently she published Rock Paper Sex Volume Two: Trigger Warning, which takes a closer look at the myriad of perspectives and stories linked to human trafficking and sex work in Newfoundland and Labrador.

She is currently working on a Diploma in Criminology.
