When it comes to barriers women entrepreneurs face, Stephanie Karlovits, founder and CEO of EPIC Fitness + Lifestyle, said that it breaks down to three things.

“Funding has been a big one; support and protection, and growth,” said Karlovits, noting that her student debt was an obstacle to getting financing, and that she feels that she has more protection as a residential tenant than she does as a CEO when it comes to commercial disputes. She also laments the lack of support available for when she wants to take time off to have a family.

“It can’t just be a meritocracy and a fight to the death — we need to be supported,” said Karlovits.

At EPIC Fitness, 12 personal trainers use functional training – weight bearing exercises that target the core and lower back muscles – to help people learn more about their bodies in order to make permanent changes to their lifestyle.

“Our philosophy is that we’re not here to fix people. People are not broken – they just need to be reinvigorated.”

Living your Potential at EPIC Fitness

For Stephanie Karlovits, owner of Ottawa’s EPIC Fitness, working out isn’t only about getting stronger or losing weight. She has a philosophy that takes into account what an individual needs not only in the gym, but in order to become better in all aspects of their life.

EPIC’s objective is not about lifting the most or gaining muscle mass the fastest, in fact the physical perks of working out there is almost a side effect. Its objective is to help you be the best version of yourself you can be.

shoot sept 24 2014 5Karlovits graduated from Carleton University giving her a background in psychology and exercise science. Throughout her undergrad and after graduating, she worked as a trainer at GoodLife and was very successful in connecting with her clients and helping them to reach their goals. Karlovits slowly attained the viewpoint she would go on to share with the Ottawa community by creating EPIC Fitness.

“It’s about making people understand where their motivation comes from, getting them to think about that on a regular basis and getting them to fuel their energy from that place,” Karlovits explained. “What that place is, is finding the ideal you. What is the ideal you in your mind, what kind of choices would that person make and are you making those choices.”

This way of thinking is truly reflected in the tagline of the gym: Live your potential. EPIC’s goal is to help people realize their potential exists within themselves and EPIC aids in doing whatever is necessary to let that shine through.

Fellow panellist Stephanie Karlovits, the co-founder of Epic Fitness + Lifestyle in the city’s east end, said millennials – who now represent the largest share of the U.S. labour market – have been conditioned to share even the most private aspects of their lives on social media and expect employers to be just as forthcoming about their business plans.

“That’s very different from other generations,” she told the audience of about 100 at the Westin’s posh TwentyTwo banquet room.

Your website says Epic Fitness is about “more than fitness.” Can you elaborate?
Fitness is boring on it's own and it's not the "answer" to what I believe we are all searching for. We have been telling people for too long now that getting "fit" means getting healthy, but the truth is, it's often not the case. We see many fit people in a lot of pain physically and mentally. Doing MORE of the wrong thing does not get us closer to living an EPIC life - it's really about balance and self awareness of what YOU need in order to level up. Establishing healthy habits that are sustainable and are based in science and are 100% tailored to you and your life is the secret. We teach a lifestyle and by doing that we open people up to living the life of their dreams - climbing mountains, crossing items off their bucket list and really appreciating life with no limits. They need less "stuff", gain real confidence, strength in body and mind and truly start living for sometimes the first time.
