The Leadership Mistake You're Almost Surely Making

When I work with leaders they come from all kinds of industries and functions. They may be experts in finance, operations, mining, transportation, or any number of other fascinating subject areas. When we begin our work together, I always start with one statement, “once you become a leader your subject matter expertise will only account for 50% or less of your job. The other half of your work will be in leadership.” When I say this, most leaders don’t believe me, and to be honest, most leaders don’t operate that way. Many still rely on their subject matter expertise (SME), thinking that it will lead them to success, but this actually has the opposite effect. Relying too heavily on SME is perhaps the most common mistake as a people leader.
We are outraged. Now what?

It’s a dark time for anyone who believes in equal rights for all genders. Regardless of whether you have a uterus, live in the US, have ever needed reproductive health care or not, when the human rights of any group are under attack, we should all be afraid and outraged. When a group of people are treated as less human, it opens the door for more of the same.
“Until all of us have made it, none of us have made it.” - the Honourable Rosemary Brown.
Reproductive justice and gender justice are not separate. The ability to make choices about our bodies and our health is a basic human right and to see that right violated is shocking and heartbreaking.

Here’s the thing. Women are just over 50% of the world’s population. If we want something, anything, the numbers are on our side. We are a huge group when we come together, and this is a time for women to come together.
We are facing some incredibly complex challenges in our world – climate crisis, persistent racism and white supremacy, unrealized reconciliation with indigenous peoples, gender inequality, attacks on reproductive rights and LGBTQ2SIA+ rights, and the continued lack of representation in our highest leadership roles in pretty much every institution in our society. I don’t know about you, but I think the time for a sea change in leadership is long past due. We’ve given white men the reins and the keys for generations. I think we need to take 50% of it back.

We hear a lot about values-based leadership, and leading with values is a core piece of the curriculum at the Women’s Leadership Intensive (WLI). But what does it actually look and feel like to make decisions based on our values? Making decisions based on values sounds great, but sometimes it’s not an easy decision, it’s not always black and white and there are potential risks and consequences.

Testimonials
Reading this book is like being in an important group conversation with someone who asks 2 kinds of questions: the ones everyone wants to ask but is afraid to, and the ones no one thought to ask but once we hear them say, “Yeah why is that?” Both insightful and common sensical this book weaves Belinda's story and research as it invites us to a new kind of leadership. Leadership that reclaims human dignity, social responsibility and environmental stewardship.
In Women, Leadership, and Saving the World, Belinda Clemmensen finds the unique blend of being challenging and convicting, yet at the same time, encouraging and supportive. I feel that I now have a WAY better understanding of how broken our current situation is, why this is hurting all of us, and how people like me can be part of the solution. As a man and as a business owner, I think this should be required reading.
If you wonder why so many things in our crazy world just aren’t working, there isn’t a better place to start than this bravely written, timely book. From start to finish, Clemmensen authoritatively tackles why a lack of women in leadership is at the root of most global problems we are facing today; and she lays out a clear, step-by-step guide to change that reality. If you want to be a woman who leads (or a man who supports the movement) this is your go-to guide.
