Biography

After a two-decade hiatus, during which she worked in educational media at Simon Fraser University, Ivana Filipović returned to cartooning and writing. Since 2018, her comics have been published in Canada, Sweden, Slovenia, and Serbia, and she exhibited at the French Institute (L’Institut français) galleries in Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia, in Angoulême in France, Belgrade International Comics Festival, and the NOVA Comic Arts Festival in Serbia. Conundrum Press published her first graphic novel in 2023, while the Serbian publisher of world-class graphic novels, Komiko, committed to publishing a collection of her short comics in 2024. In April 2023, Filipović was awarded Canada’s highest award for cartooning, the 2023 Doug Wright Award for Canada’s best self-published/small press comic book for WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN collection of short comics, the first such award given to an artist from Western Canada. Her comic art work consists of hundreds of pages published by respected publishers and the most prestigious literary and culture magazines in Europe, while her digital educational illustrations adorn Canadian museums. As a designer, illustrator, art director and executive producer of educational documentaries, Filipović holds prestigious international and domestic awards, including the invitation-only United Nations World Summit Award for the world’s best culture website in 2009.
