Biography

Dr. Laura Targownik is a clinical gastroenterologist and researcher with a focus on health services research and epidemiology of chronic disease. She is also a woman who undertook a gender transition 25 years ago, and who recently went public with this part of her history to be a more visible example of a relatable, successful trans woman, both to people within and outside the trans community.

Dr. Targownik has over 200 peer-reviewed publications and has extensive experience as a public speaker and scientific educator and communicator. While her primary area of focus has been on gastrointestinal health, she has more recently become increasingly vocal in advocating for the preservation of trans rights and for the ability of trans people to live dignified lives

Her experience as a researcher and science communicator provides her with a unique position to discuss contemporary issues surrounding the intersection of trans experiences, trans justice, and trans politics with the culture at large.
