“Turfed,” “let go abruptly,” “resigned” or “quit” – the language may change but the scenario itself is discouragingly frequent. In the past decade alone, at least 18 Canadian university presidents have had their first mandates cut short. This is costly and unfortunate for all concerned. And my research suggests it’s largely avoidable.

Leadership In Higher Education: Case Study Research of Canadian University Presidents with Unfinished Mandates

The trend of an increasing number of unfinished mandates of university presidents in Canada leads to some important questions that require further exploration. Through an in-depth series of interviews with six of the 16 Canadian university presidents with unfinished mandates, this research dives deeply into leadership experiences and highlights patterns and trends within the individual trajectories leading to their shortened mandate.

Biography

Dr. Julie Cafley is an accomplished leader and academic with expertise in higher education leadership and governance. Before joining Catalyst, she worked as VP Digital Research at Alliance of Canada and Executive Vice-President at the Public Policy Forum. Cafley built bridges and enhanced the profile and visibility of the PPF while directing its communications, external partnerships, membership and learning teams. In her previous role as Chief of Staff to two presidents at the University of Ottawa, Cafley worked closely with the senior executive team to develop and advance strategic initiatives. Cafley holds a PhD in education leadership from the University of Ottawa. Her thesis focused on higher education leadership and governance through the lens of unfinished terms of Canadian university presidents. Cafley is an active community leader and a tireless champion for diversity initiatives.
